Early days in DC

Some first days in DC

Welcome to DC!

Well, it's been five months since I arrived to Washington, DC, so it's about time I populated this blog and shared some experiences, information, and good times.

For new arrivals, I found my apartment via Craigslist and had a buddy in town to scope out the final competing possibilities. The downside to living in Glover Park is that it's in the metro dead zone. There's no easy access to the rest of the city so I travel by bus, bike, and cab. The upside is that I'm one block from everything I could think I'd need (with 2 trips to the suburban big box stores in the beginning for housewares):

  • 2 dry cleaning options - I opted for Sargent Cleaners: great tailoring, fabulous service, and environmentally-friendly cleaning

  • Pearson's Liquor & Wine Store

  • Heritage India - with free delivery if I'm that lazy

  • Bruegger's Bagels - when I am that lazy

  • Whole Foods Market

  • Sushi-Ko - great sushi

  • Glover Park Hardware

  • An ice cream shop, BBQ restaurant, great options for happy hour and brunch, and
the Consulate of El Salvador, in case I find a need to visit the country
.

And, just down Wisconsin Avenue is Aveda, tons of shopping (including second hand stores), bike shops (got my bike tuned up there for the summer) and then M Street in Georgetown for all kinds of eating and more shopping.

Plus, my apartment building is awesome. Great management, fabulous apartment, friendly neighbors, responsive maintenance, on-site laundry, and a great rooftop view:

Aside from that, I'm just short of the beautiful, Notre Dame-inspired Cathedral (see above), as well as some great eating places such as Two Amy's pizza. So, while I debate whether to move for a shorter commute (1/2 hour bus ride to work in the AM) and easier access to metro, I'm really quite fond of where I'm situated. Plus, if I ever need anything from the east side of the world, I can always pop in to the Russian Embassy!
